December Isn't for Coasting: It's Your Best Month to Reset

Everyone treats December like a throwaway month. That's exactly why it's the best time to get ahead. While your competitors coast, you can reset.

Everyone Treats December Like a Throwaway Month

That's exactly why it's the best time to get ahead.

While your competitors are:

  • "Winding down for the holidays"
  • "Waiting until January to make changes"
  • "Taking it easy until the new year"

You can be doing something different.

Something that puts you ahead before the year even starts.

The December Advantage Nobody Talks About

Here's what I've noticed after 35 years in business:

The owners who win January prepared in December.

Not by working harder. Not by grinding through the holidays.

By doing one simple thing:

Auditing what's actually happening in their business.

December is quiet. Clients slow down. Fires get smaller.

That creates space.

And space is where clarity lives.

The Three Questions That Matter

Before the year ends, sit down and answer these honestly:

1. What worked this year that I should double down on?

Not what felt busy. What actually moved the needle?

Look at your revenue. Look at your time. Look at your energy.

Where did effort actually produce results?

2. What didn't work that I kept doing anyway?

We all have things we do out of habit, not effectiveness.

Marketing channels that don't convert. Meetings that don't produce decisions. Clients that drain more than they pay.

Name them. Write them down.

3. What am I tolerating that I shouldn't be?

This is the hardest one.

The team member who's "fine but not great." The process that's "annoying but manageable." The chaos that's "just how things are."

Tolerance is expensive. It compounds.

The Reset Ritual

Here's what I do every December, and what I coach my clients to do:

Week 1: Collect the data. Revenue by client. Time by activity. Energy by task.

Week 2: Identify the patterns. What's working? What's draining? What's invisible friction?

Week 3: Make three decisions. One thing to stop. One thing to start. One thing to fix.

Week 4: Rest. Seriously. You've earned it. But rest knowing you're walking into January with clarity, not chaos.

Why This Matters More Than Resolutions

New Year's resolutions fail because they're based on hope, not data.

"I'll be more organized." "I'll delegate more." "I'll grow the business."

These aren't plans. They're wishes.

A December reset gives you something better:

Specific changes based on what actually happened.

Not what you hoped would happen. Not what you planned to do. What actually happened.

That's the foundation for real change.

Your Move

December isn't a throwaway month.

It's a gift, if you use it.

While everyone else is coasting, you can be:

  • Auditing your time
  • Identifying your bottlenecks
  • Making decisions that set up January for success

The year doesn't start on January 1st.

It starts the moment you decide to stop tolerating what isn't working.

That moment can be right now.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why is December a good month for business planning?

December is naturally quieter: clients slow down, fires get smaller, and there's space for reflection. This creates the perfect environment to audit what's working and make strategic decisions for the coming year.

  2. What should I focus on during a December reset?

Focus on three questions: What worked that you should double down on? What didn't work that you kept doing anyway? What are you tolerating that you shouldn't be? These reveal where to focus your energy in the new year.

  3. How is this different from New Year's resolutions?

Resolutions are based on hope. A December reset is based on data, what actually happened in your business this year. Specific changes based on real patterns beat vague wishes every time.
